Moving a current mortgage: reasonable time to seek employment references

We are moving house, and taking our current mortgage with us. Since buying our property we have always paid the mortgage on time and in full (with capital), so that we now own more of the property, we are looking at getting a smaller mortgage as down sizing and we both earn more money in permanent jobs.

Coventry our current lender asked for employment references at the end of Sept, which in itself is ok, but it has taken them over a month to seek them and we are now looking at losing the flat. To top this off, my wife had a couple of months off work from August to October, and they now want to seek a further two years previous referenes for her...god only knows how long this will take.

So my question is what reasonable action can I take with them, I lost my rag on the phone once which made me feel better but not sure if it did me any favours.
