background checks in jobs?

The company I work for takes up 5 years references. When it was discovered the employee had lied they would be sacked due to being dishonest. But in fairness, our whole recruitment process is very integrity and honesty focused and employees require an Enhanced Disclosure too.
We're the same. We outsource our checks to an organisation that specialises in this but most companies use questionnaires to previous organisations. The length of time they go back is purely down to their own version of best practice! I have worked for a couple of companies who didn't even check my academics which was ironic given my role!

I would say also that it's not just about the vetting procedures. If an employer has hired you on your claims, who's to say that at some unexpected moment weeks into your role you're given a project/task on that basis or caught off guard with something you claimed, the embarrassment alone would stop most people from doing this.

At the end of the day, a risk is a risk no matter which way you dress it up, but it's theirs to take. On their silly head be it!

OP a lot of people in this forum will get on their high horse over this, but believe me - an awful lot do lie on their cv, or bend the truth in some tiny way - but don't admit it. I wouldn't go as far as post 3 states the person who did this is an idiot,I think it is resourseful & if you can get away with it then good luck to you - times are hard these days and if you have the brains to put yourself above other candidates then good luck to you. It beats being honest and bleating about having no job!

At the end of the day, once you have the job, you can prove yourself once in there, all you are doing is giving yourself an extra foot in the door.
The opposite of what you know...is also true

It's not a case of getting on my high horse, lying on your CV is wrong.

Yes some people may get away with it but if found out and sacked then it's going to be harder to get another job.

Replies to posts are always welcome, If I have made a mistake in the post, I am human, tell me nicely and it will be corrected. If your reply cannot be nice, has an underlying issue, or you believe that you are God, please post in another forum. Thank you

When I was made redundant from my first job (some 8years ago now) I was asked why I was made redundant during interviews, I told the truth... the company is going bust. However at the time they still had a website (which I used to maintain) which advertised two jobs (only to make it look like a large company which it was not)... the interviewer of the jobs I were applying for were then faced with a) believing what I said, or B) believing that the very professional website said. So it made me look like a liar; I wish I did lie on my CV back then.

The company went bust about 8months later.
