I train people to become driving instructors, so feel I can probably offer some sound advice on this.
1. Fully qualified ADI's (Approved Driving Instructors) must display a green hexagon badge inside their windscreen. PDI's (Potential Driving Instructors) must display a red triangle badge inside their windscreen.
2. Ask yourself WHY any particular driving school has 'special offers' or '1st lesson free'... I would be particularly wary of those companies or individuals who offer VERY silly offers, like 'first 5 lessons for £50'. Busy, successful driving instructors should not need to entice new pupils with special offers. So basically, the better the offer appears to be, the less likely it is that the instructor is very busy. Draw your own conclusions
3. The best way to find a good driving instructor is through recommendation. My pass rates for the ADI examinations are exceptional. All of my work comes from recommendation, hence I do not need to advertise nor offer my services for silly prices in order to fill my diary.
4. ADI's are given a 'grade' after their first Check Test (yes, we are continually tested to ensure we're still doing our jobs properly!). Grades 1-3 are SUBSTANDARD, Grade 4 is good, Grade 5 is very good, and Grade 6 is excellent. So, ask what grade the instructor is when you make an enquiry.
5. National pass rates are less than 50%. Ask the driving school or instructor what their pass rates are. Anything above the national average is good.
6. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. Ask around to see who your friends / relatives learned to drive with. If you're not happy with your current instructor, SAY SOMETHING or find another one!
Hope that helps - PM me if you'd like any other advice_________________________________________________

In my Chat (Issue 3) magazine it has a coupon for a free 1hr driving lesson with BSM. You need to fill in all your details and post the coupon, or you can email name, address, telephone no, email addy and date of birth and a BSM instructor will get in touch shortly to arrange your lesson. To qualify you must have a provisional licence or have one by 31/5/07 and must not be learning to drive with BSM. Indicate if you have any disabilities that affect your driving and if the lesson is needed ASAP.
It seems to be no obligation though they'll likely encourage you to take out a full course. Lesson can be taken between now and the end of May 07. Coupons must be returned by end of March 07.
enquiries@l-driving.biz or buy the magazine for 78p and post or fax the coupon.I've been lucky, I'll be lucky again. ~ Bette Davis0 -
