Student with 2 part time jobs - tax?

Right I have 2 jobs while studying at uni

Casual work - Stocktaker... I do this when I have the time, only do like a few shifts a month, earn about 200 a month doing it (about 4 shifts)

My other job is working at Tesco, 15 hours a week, earning £400 a month.

I think somehow my tesco job is down as my 2nd job which is why I have tax code BR, paying 20% tax on my income... so i'm only actually getting £320 a month from Tesco.

What happens tax wise? Can I change it to tax my other job instead of tesco (as this is my main fixed income) and then get a tax rebate for my income?

What can I do? I will ring up when I know.. lol

Thanks guys.

With the total income from both jobs, you are still under the personal allowance so shouldn't be paying any tax.

As neither job would use up your personal allowance, it would be better to ask HMRC to split your allowance between the two jobs.

With your Tesco job you are earning £4800pa so a tax code of 500L could be attached to the Tesco job leaving a tax code of 247L for the other job.

Give HMRC a ring and ask them to split your personal allowance over the two jobs. Make sure you have the figures for each.

In theory (£400pm + £200pm x 12 = £7200pa) - you're inside your personal allowance of £7475 (Code 747), therefore no tax payable. But you're close if those rounded figures of yours are all just on the low side?

2 choices. You can ring HMRC and apportion the allowances between the 2 jobs (say Code 500 for Tesco and 247 for the other). Only risk is that you undershoot on earnings for either / both and therefore finish up overpaid. 2nd choice - as you inferred is merely to switch BR to the other job. In which case you will definitely overpay.

On balance I'd ask HMRC to apportion the allowances?

With your salary ...... for the pay period immediately following Tesco getting the cumulative code (suggested as Code 500L).
