I wish I could say this filled me with exitement but remembering last year when a massive 10% was applied to only a few older items (even the normal deals where outstandingly better) I don't feel anything other then vague irritation at being let down and then wondering if its worth the same effort this year.

I don't remember this being about in the UK before last year on Amazon (not to say it wasn't, just that I'd never seen it before) its very much a US thing, I'm sort of wondering and hoping that maybe they will try to do better this year. Though I'm not holding out much faith in that happening.

can someone explain to us novices what black friday is pretty pls?

The fourth Thursday in November is Thanksgiving in USA. Once it is over thoughts turn to Christmas, only four weeks away. It's a big retail event. Most people have the day off work anyhow and Christmas shopping gets under way. Retailers there make a big fuss, with all kinds of promotions of varying quality, a bit like our Boxing Day sales but more American.

For many retailers, or so the story goes, it's the first time all year that their profit and loss account moves into the black and they have a little over a month to make some money. Hence, Black Friday, and hence it will always be on the fourth Friday in November.

There may have been people complaining but IMO it was simply sour grapes. I checked the prices of the items that I wanted and they did, mostly, come in substantially cheaper than otherwise available. I got 3 of the things I tried for, but missed out on the cook books that I really wanted and which were, for me, the best reduction of the lot - and at that point I was using a second hand, very low spec PC and my broadband was dropping out several times a day so it wasn't even that I had a super-duper equipment or connection. And I'm actually writing this post on the laptop I bought in the Black Friday event last year after checking whether it was a good deal on the 'techie stuff' board. My son bought the same laptop from Amazon about 3 months later and paid more so it wasn't even that it was about to be reduced to that price. All in all, if they run it again this year and there's something that takes my fancy I will definitely make the effort. Hang on, maybe I shouldn't have written all this, the naysayers might change their mind and beat me to the bargains LOL
