There should be a letter from the bailiff stating which dates the debt relates to?

If not, ask him to ring on Monday and get the Council to tell him the dates and the amounts of each liability order.

And did he claim single person's discount for the periods he lived alone after he left uni?

I will ask him and find out, if not i wil tell him to contact council first thing monday morning to find out

Unless the discount is automatically applied i dont think he would have done as he doesnt understand alot of these things, he didnt even know he could claim working tax credits till a couple of months ago when i asked him if he had put a claim in.

    OK

He probably need to see a local benefits advisor and see if he can get them to back-date the single person's discount, plus get a full benefit make-over to see if he is getting all the help to which he is eligibleHTB as well?

Can he find out where and when his local councillor next has a surgery? It may be a very good idea to go and see them (possibly together) and to see if the Council will take back the account whilst they recalculate what he owes.

They can take the debt from his benefits, which might be a less painful option than trying to find the money in other ways.

How long since he left University? If within three years, he is entitled to help at their Careers Service still.
