2nd part time job......whats the score?

I currently work part time as a house keeper in a reidential home for the elderly and earn £750 a month before tax.......I have just been offered a 2nd cleaning job working nights that would pull in £195 a month......what happens to my earnings? will i be taxed at a higher rate for having 2 jobs? Can someone please explain in layman terms what the outcome would be for me? Thanks in advance :)

  • no u will not be taxed at a higher rate. you are taxed the same what ever you earn unlesss its loads and loads. bu what happens is you are allowed to earn so much ayear tax free. ANYTHING over that amount you pay tax on, so if you are paying some tax allready then you are allready over your tax free threshold so anything you earn now will get taxed. basically you will lose roughly a third in tax on your second job your first will stay the same

    A third is 33.3%.
The actual tax rate which would be applied is 20%.
If you were thinking of adding the difference in respect of NI, then it would not apply to the OP because earnings would be too low in the second job - unless it were with the same employer.

Your first job carries on being taxed as it is now but your second job will be taxed at basic rate (BR tax code) with no allowance. I.e. all of your tax-free allowances goes on your main job.
