Backing up DVD's to Hard Drive

I have copied my old 8mm Hi camcorder tapes to DVD and would now like to back them up to a portable hard drive.

I've carried out a straight copy using my PC, but when I plug the drive into my SAamsung Blu ray player it does not find any videos - can anyone help with ideas on how I could do this. please.

it depends on what format your blue ray player supports. if it supports mpeg, browse to the video_ts folder and play the files.

in terms of pure backup, the best way is to use imgburn to copy the dvd to an iso file (an image of the disc, from which you can recreate the dvd in future should you need to), but most media/bluray players don't support iso playback, you could get one that does for around £20, but it would mean another box plugged into the tv

Ok - thank you. Browsing the Video_ts file on the bluray player does not open the folder - although on the PC it does, and I can play the video through windows media player. I'll try again tomorrow.

It sounds like the BlueRay player can't play the VOB files in the Video_TS directory (whereas applications on your PC can) you might need to create a Movie DVD to be able to view on your BlueRay player by using an application like ImgBurn (Free) which is available from here: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Alternatively, you can use Ashampoo Burning Studio to do the same (Select "Burn Movies" from the menu): http://www.ashampoo.com/en/usd/pin/0710/Offline/Ashampoo-Burning-Studio-6/Overview
Easy to follow step by step instruction using ImgBurn: http://www.gromkov.com/faq/faq2004-0026.html
