DIY Solar Installation

Options
I am about to commission a Worcester Bosch Solar (thermal) Panels along with new boiler costing £4K+ following a renovation project and was wondering whether there is any financial help that I should have explored before buying? The RHI offers around £300 if its installed by a MCS accredited installer but having seen there quote (excessive) I put it in myself. Now I’ve just been told that if I had used them I would of had a reduced VAT bill of 5% on the parts and not the 20% I paid. The Government looks to be encouraging home owners to do there bit and look to be helping but am I entitled to any at this stage? Many thanks

No, you wanted to save money by putting it in yourself, you should have noticed the 5% on the MCS quote. You now have to pay 20% and no RHI, you can't change your mind now.

  • Thanks for the reply! Regarding the overall cost of my installation I’m still on a win win situation verses the MCS quote I received and would choose to do the same again rather than pay the extortionate inflated cost quoted!

I was just simply asking the question if I was entitled to some VAT back as a DIY installer of Renewable energy given that they have incentives.

i fitted my own to about 3 years ago

i fitted 2x 20 tube panels so 40 tubes in total

ive never looked back i dont use any gas from march to november

the water tank today is 45c 300lts

best thing i have ever fitted and only cost £320 each panel
and £200 for the stainless steal tank
    £100 for the controler
it has paid for its self by now :j
  • Thats great News! The solar side of my system has been working over the last 2-3weeks and its amazing whats being harvested. I do believe the solar thermal side of the renewables has been upstaged with the current PV feed in Tariffs but nevertheless its a great system!

Good to see this thread. I have just had a new boiler and a twin coil HW tank fitted ready for a DIY project to add solar thermal panel(s). I will be keeping as close eye on developments with these government incentives but I cannot see how you can beat the DIY route for return on investment.
