I've ordered stuff from America. I've only been charged customs tax the once and I think it came to more than £30. The sweatshirt i'd ordered cost just under $40 (wasn't available here that's why I had to get it from the US). It was a few years ago but I managed to appeal it with DHL. The online shop hadn't put the value on the outside of the package.

It's one of those things you just can't say for certain, it depends what they put on the customs form and who you get at customs. At least if you prepare for it and don't get a bill it's a bonus!! Have they given you a tracking code or anything?
  • you might be ok, my stuff from the US usually takes at least a week.

  • I've not ordered from the US before, but have ordered from HK and they put it was a gift to avoid taxes.

    Hope you don't get charged!

    The £18 does include shipping.

The Import VAT percentage rate is applied to the total value of the goods. In the case of goods brought in this is the sterling equivalent of the price paid abroad, as shown on the receipt. In the case of goods posted from outside the EU, it is the amount on the Customs Declaration, which includes the price paid for the goods, the cost of transport, postage and packing, insurance and any duty that may be payable

    Taken from http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/tax-and-duty.htm

    Only once over the limit.

There is an exemption on any item where the goods value is under £18 (going down to £15 in a few days from memory).

However once the goods value is over the exemption limit, the total cost of the package: goods + posting/handling is taken into account for taxation purposes.

For example (and I've had this happen many times) a package with goods worth under £18 but with a highish postage have got through fine even with courier delivery which is normally a gauranteed customs hit.
However goods with a value of £18.01 or more always get hit when sent via the same method (courier).

So a parcel that has a total value of £30 made up of £11.99 goods, and £18.01 express shipping is customs free.
A parcel with a total value of £30 but with the goods at £18.01 and the shipping at £11.99 will be liable for customs.

It's extremely annoying when you're just over the exemption limit, as you can end up paying 2-3 times as much on handling fees by RM than the cost of the taxes due.
  • I have ordered from the usa for years and years and have only been charged import tax (£11 from memory and £8 of it was royal mail's charge!!) On one occasion so imo, its worth a go :)

sorry to revive an old(ish) thread but I am considering ordering some jasmine goods for dd as she loves her and you cannot get much on the .co.uk or french/german sites - just wondering if anyone has ordered recently and if you got stung by tax and postage additional costs?
