That sounds like it's likely to be a debt collector's agent so yeah, just open the window, say your piece and close it again, nothing they can do.

Please don't worry about this, as said above, I've been there and was never worried I'd lose anything of mine.

I know two credit card companies had a 'lean' on the mortgage they had, because that was part of the buying process - in fact it nearly crashed the sale because they wouldn't allow them to mortgage for those debts on the house they were buying and suddenly they couldn't afford to move into the one they wanted after repaying the credit card debt they had from the sale.

Well, I guess I'll wait and see who turns up - I am not comfortable with it though, but I did know that they were in debt and had money problems.

Are debt collectors the same in principle as bailiffs then? What are the main differences please?

    No....they are a world apart.

A Bailiff is a Court-appointed official, empowered by the Court to take payments or seize property to equivalent value, from an individual who has defaulted on a payment ordered by the Court.

A Debt collector is simply an employee of a debt collection agency...one of the tools a DCA uses to extract moneys from debtors, by applying personal, face-to-face pressure....and as such, have absolutely zero powers, just like any doorstep salesperson.

In your instance, you have absolutely nothing to fear from either individuals....absolutely no need to go hiding from anybody, since the debt apparently owed is not yours.

BTW, DCA's are not allowed to harass anybody who is not involved with the particular debt they are pursuing.
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

    Thankyou so much.

I feel ok now - having never owed money like this it's just a sort of scarey thought that someone will turn up and demand money - and it's clearly in someone else's name, and I have the purchase documents from solicitors etc showing we bought it in July so I'm sure I'll be fine.
