Do I need to wear a suit?

Try a charity shop. I got a M+S 3 piece suit (trousers, skirt and jacket) for £12.50.

Something like that maybe and you can machine wash it!

Wearing a black jacket which is not exactly matched to the trousers can look odd and worse than no jacket at all. Black, navy and white colours are very, very difficult to match and variations in shade and weave will show.

Better to go for black trousers, white or black blouse and then a jacket of a muted contrasting colour - that way everyone knows that you are not trying to match the fabric.
