how do
Although I haven't officially joined in this month, I have been working away in the background not to throw food away during december and lurking away at this tread.
Had a go at cooking the spud peelings and having them with sweet chilli sauce, mayo and salsa and they were surprisingly good, even OH said he enjoyed them.
Still wasted a bit of yogurt but not the milk so far.
doing the challenge last month really made me keep an eye on the contents of the fridge and use up what I have and it also made me think more about quantities which I was/am buying. I will probably come back again officially next year, oh err that will soon be here, and join in again.
Keep up the good work all, its defo worth it....:D:D:DSPC Nbr.... 1484....£800 Saved £946 in 2013)

I have a big confession. I was really poorly last week and just didnt have the energy to cook. Out went the following:
about 6 bananas, a 500gm packet of braising steak, half a cue, half a butternut squash, half a courgette and a couple of tomatoes.
I really just couldnt muster the energy to do anything apart from exist. I dread to think of the cost.0 -

Hello all
I've been directed over to this thread by Oscar the Pug, who suggested I might like to take up this challenge. After the amount of food I threw away when my fridge freezer broke, plus the end-of-the-week throw away, plus my dd leaving about half of every meal she's given I am looking for ways to stop wasting so much food.
dd's portion size has been reduced, and tonight for the first time in months I had no fight with her and she ate everything that she was given.
I'm not sure what target to aim for for the rest of this month because I don't fully know how much I'm throwing away cash wise, but I do know that keeping an eye on it will stop me and my family being so blimming wasteful.
I have a couple of questions, if someone could help, or direct me to the right thread to find out.
Exactly how long do leftovers last if they're put in the fridge? Say I had cooked chicken - how long would I have to use the leftovers? Meat particularly concerns me... I'm fine with dairy, fruit and veg etc. But meat and canned foods I'm less sure of.
Thanks- looking forward to joining in and saving even more money.Ninja Saving Turtle0 -
Wannabee- can you save what DD leaves for lunch the next day, or freeze it? No need for it to go straight in the bin, depending what's been cooked.
25p odd been chucked this week - OH threw a bottle of tomato and red pepper relish, I would have kept eating it but he was adamant that it had been open for months and therefore should go. Given he's usually pretty laid back about use by dates, I let him - not too much left anyway.February Grocery Challenge - £100.87/£180February Don't Throw Food Away Challenge - £0.60/£1.500 -
Wannabee, I don't know if we have a thread, but I like to use meat up within 48 hours; I'm sure you know this but if the meat has been frozen, thawed out and cooked, its ok to refreeze it for another day, I save quite small amounts and use them in pasties, or pasta dishes etc... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Hi
We have a number of threads that contain lots of questions on food safety.
See: food safety threads here on Old Style MoneySaving
And "is it safe?" specific threads: safe threads here on Old Style MoneySaving
It's also worth having a read here: I searched but couldn't find anything
Don't forget that for long threads you can use the "Search this thread" link (towards the top right) to find any posts that mention a particular food that you are interested in - rather than having to read through it all.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. I have 2 dd and had the same problem with them wasting food as some days they would eat more than others.
I now put food in separate bowls like veg, rice, pasta etc. They then help themselves in small portions and if they want more they can add to their plates. If there is any leftovers in the bowls I use them for lunch the next day or make into something else for tea the next day. For example leftover mashed potato could be turned into fried potato cakes, croquettes or frozen for another day.
