  • Squeaky thanks for the chicken ideas - going to go through those threads with a fine toothcomb :)

Outtawork when you freeze the eggs can they then be used for things like scrambled eggs when defrosted or just for adding to cakes, bread etc. Never knew you could freeze them, terrible at my age (55). You live and learn :)

Need more ideas - found one banana and a pomegranate in fruit basket - went to put apples that came today in delivery in it, it had been hidden under a cooking book, and found this lone banana that has to at least a week old, not black but can imagine its very dry, only thing I have ever made with them is banana fritters and that is off the menu due to said hubby, so what can I use it for or is it right you can freeze them and if so how? Also went digging in fridge and found half a pomegranate I forgot about, it was so big ate half and put other in plastic bag in fridge again about a week ago, bought two, other still in fruit basket but seems ok but if anyone has any ideas for them would be grateful - oh the things I would have wasted, as I would have just put them in the compost bin ( ok not total waste but still).

    So any ideas?????

    Thank you you wonderful people

  • I have only made omlette so far with my frozen beaten eggs, I added a drop of water when they were defrosted & beat them again. no difference in taste. I plan to use the defrosted bananas in a banana & apple fruit cake, but havent done it yet.

I'm all set up ready to log my waste starting from tomorrow.

I had considered not counting anything that went to compost since it gets used (eventually) to grow something else... but then I realised that this would leave my waste count at zero every month. Which wouldn't actually be true if I threw away a couple of oranges that had gone mouldy, for instance.

But what about veg cuttings like the hard stalky bit of a cabbage that only ever gets used for making stock before it gets put in the compost...? I mean - it's been used in a sense - I've got as much goodness out of it as I can - just didn't actually eat it.

Hmmm... making it too complicated :)

Anyway - I know for sure I'll have some waste this week. I bought some Edam cheese and I've never found a use for that outer skin bit (not the red wax) that seems to have the imprint of cheesecloth in it. So that'll be the first stuff to waste.

Edit: just got rid of it - 10g of waste (and edam is £5.50 per kilo) so 6p wastage - straight into the cat :)

    Hello all,

So far I estimate 36p so far, now I've got another confession :D 1/4 tub of coleslaw, it was on its date, which I know isn't a reason to throw it away, but it didn't look great either. Although we should have used it up.

I was going to check the price on My Supermarket but can only get search results for Moneysupermarket.

    Never mind, I'm guessing about 55p so a 1/4 = 13p.

    So 49p so far.

Can I ask for the recipe for this I love olives and tomatoes, sadly only me, hubby cannot stand either

    Thanks

Clearly, I do not know which recipe Spiky used, but here is one (and a super frugal one at that) that I have used and enjoyed before:

  • Had to throw away the pumpkin today. It was 99p in Aldi, I got it thinking soup, my little boy (66) wanted to carve out a pumpkin head. Don't you love them?.........

No waste again for me today:j
Took an old tin of soup to work for lunch with some fruit and am having a chilled pack of potato gratin from Aldi (about 89p and very nice for the price) and 2 glamorgan sausages from the freezer for tea.

Will take the rest of the potato gratin to work to heat up for lunch tomorrow and some more of the fruit mountain. Easy but yummy!

That sounds lovely, think will make hubby spag bol tomorrow, I only like it now and again and make this for me. I like the idea can simmer it in slow cooker as well as hob, so will do it that way.

    Thanks for the recipe:j

Please forgive me for I have sinned. I have thrown the chicken carcas out. All the meat was gobbled and I so should have made a stock but sometimes...... (tired, fed up and want a cuppa)

As the meat was gone I'm not going to add it to the wastage tally but, still let myself down abit tonight being lazy. I wouldn't care, I could have boiled it up without really watching it

Fuddle - you could have frozen the carcass to make stock another day.

ANyway, my confession is greater. I made a chicken and ricey thing on Saturday when we had guests. THere was loads left and i have just microwaved a portion but I couldn't eat it. I think the rice took too long to cool down and the chicken tastes a bit funny. so I am going to chuck the whole lot - probably amounts to 3 whole meals  But i can't risk us being ill

After that, tho, i did only fancy a bowl of cereal for tea.
I wanna be in the room where it happens
