Outer leaves and stalks can be used to make stocks, and / or be part of a soup - though in a soup I normally don't have more than ¼ of the veggies made up from my "off-cuts" stash.
Stale bread is fine for breadcrumbs - these can not only be used as topping for meals that use them - but a handful in any casserole / soup / stew goes a long way to help thicken them. Then there's bread and butter pudding ( as long as the bread is not rock hard - although that may be my own preference there).

On Friday night DGD came in with her 'take away ' from the local Harvesters I have my dinner at 6 so she knew I wouldn't be wanting any She sat and ate most of it but half the box of mixed pasta salad with crutons she said she couldn't finish. It had some new potatos ,cucumber, chopped celery and odds and ends .So I told her to put it in the fridge and yesterday I finished it off with a jacket spud for lunch and a bit of lettuce and a couple of cherry tomato's .It was delicious and the only thing thrown out was the plastic box it came it Thanks Holly it topped up my lunch beautifully
:) I told you I don't like waste in any shape .Youngsterd will eat what they want then throw away the rest Not in my house

Thanks squeaky, I'll have a peruse later on
JackieO, I bet your lunch tasted lovely.
No breakfast wastage. Making pumpkin pie, made lemon curd/jam tarts with surplus pastryThey'll go in children's packed lunches this week.
I've some sweet potato that needs using and a whole load of pumpkin so will add that to the broth later on.
I have a gammon joint in the slow cooker. Going to carve it up later for the broth. It has an thick layer of fat on it so will save that and any gammon bits for the bird cake I intend making in the next few days.0 -
I'm so in
thanks for this squeaky. I remember finding this site & waste reduction thread was one of my first challenges. I've got worse
not up to the £10 at least per week I did but higher than I can afford
I shall aim for less than £10 this month. I know it was over £20 last month. I've got an added minus of one smaller freezer which I keep overstocking
Today to save wasting them I've got bending veg & reduced frying steak in the slow cooker. I'll put that into a bag, chill then freeze as I also have a beef joint to use .... Or maybe freeze the cooked beef
I've got a lot of Eating apples & Pears due to turn so maybe stew those, kiwis what can I do with those?
Any ideas for salad stuff? Tends to be my biggest wastage as mainly me eats it. Lettuce & cucumber mainly, I add the tomatoes to sauces
Lemons whoever was asking I freeze slices as drinks coolers/flavours.One day I might be more organised...........

Hi Everyone
I would like to join please:wave:
I will start on the 01.11.11 and for this month just keep a note of what is thrown away so I have a base to work from
good luck to everyoneEmma :hello:0 -
This is such a good idea. I'm making Christmas cake today and will add in some spicy stewed plums that I would otherwise have chucked.
I can vouch for the Nigella clementine cake - made it yesterday and it was absolutely gorgeous (and pretty low in fat too as no butter/oil/marge needed).0 -
Thought I was doing really well til Hubby told he just thrown away an unopened pack of 2 corn on the cob. I didn't even realise he'd put them in the trolley when we went shopping last Sat, it's like shopping with a child
there was mould on some of the cob so didn't want to risk it. Also threw away half a tin of mushy peas found lurking in the back of the fridge, possibly from a week ago Friday, still in the tin - Hubby again .
total cost of wastage : £1 for corn + 17p peas = £1.170 -
Hi
I'm so pleased with myself - I haven't thrown anything away and I've even used up some stuff that was destined for the bin - a big improvement for me!
For lunch I had a 2 week old bagel (not mouldy but a bit hard, so it went in the toaster and came out fine) and the scrappings of a pot of chocolate spread, one of last weeks satsumas (perfectly fine but I've bought more since) and an aging mince pie.
For tea its cheese and potato pie made with yesterday's mash leftovers.
I'm having a tin of soup that's been in the cupboard for ages for lunch in work tomorrow and some of the fruit mountain!
Getting the hang of it now!0
