I hate Scottish Power...

So I finally switched away from them in August.
Ever since then, both SP and my new supplier have been taking money from me via direct debit. It was clear that my accounts with Scottish Power (both electricity and gas) were in surplus, and I was waiting for my refund cheque. A refund arrived for electricity, but not for gas. Finally I decided I had had enough, and when they took more money I recalled the direct debit.
Now they have sent me a final bill claiming that I owe them money! The only explanation is that it shows a sum carried forward from the previous gas bill, and of course I cannot see the previous bill because my on-line account has been closed. I emailed them a week ago and they haven't answered (apart from an auto-acknowledgement promising a proper reply) and I tried to telephone them but they don't answer within an acceptable period. Now they have emailed again asking for the money.
If they fail to send me a proper bill and then take me to court, would I still be liable for their legal costs and court fees?

Perhaps you'd be better to either write or email making it very clear that you are making a complaint. that way they must respond to you within regulated timescales (5 or 10 days, depends on the level required). keep a copy of this contact incase you require it later.
court etc simply wont happen until your complaint is resolved and as long as everything is as you have described, will come down in your favor.0 -
I switched from SP end of Aug but I can still access all my bills including the final one mind you they haven't send me my refund cheque yet.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0

I am the official company representative of Scottish Power. MSE has given permission for me to post in response to queries about the company, so that I can help solve issues. You can see my name on the companies with permission to post list. I am not allowed to tout for business at all. If you believe I am please report it to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com This does NOT imply any form of approval of my company or its products by MSE"0 -

Thanks Graeme, but my email to the address you gave just bounced. I shall contact you by PM on this site if I may.0 -
Try adding an 's' after 'complaint'?
I imagine that they expect more than one complaint at SP...No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I couldn't resist adding a reply to a thread called "I hate Scottish Power" I'm not surprised their complaints guy gave you a dud email address, par for the course from my experience.
I had a major fire in my flat in May of this year and since July me and my building contractor have been trying to get Scottish Power to reinstall the electric and gas supply, without any success so far. It's been a tale of unanswered emails, unreturned phone calls with numerous lies and misleading information thrown in. As a result I should have been moving back into my flat this week but will be delayed weeks if not months by their obstructive and incompetent attitude.
I won't even start on what it's like to deal with them after you've lodged an official complaint. I've never hated a company as much as I hate Scottish Power.0 -
To balance the argument I've had no problems with SP and got a speedy refund as soon as my credit reached a certain amount.
There again I have not tried to move to another provider.0 -
I deal with purchasing energy as part of my job - I have had that much trouble with Scottish Power in the past I don't even contact them for quotes anymore - when I did they were more expensive and they are horrible to deal with, the staff generally seem confused, and as a result come over as aggressive and angry. I am Scottish BTW so it is not just the Glasgow accents that makes me think that - Glaswegians are brilliant if they are allowed to be! I have also noticed when I use a comparison site for my domestic energy that they are nowhere near the cheapest either. In a nutshell my impression of this mob is of a cynical company that makes it profits from the apathy of customers who can't be bothered to deal with their energy bills. Unfortunately it seems to have worked for them to date, probably a sign that the 'competitive' market needs some freshening up...0

I'd just like to add that I HATE SCOTTISH POWER too.
Just needed to get that off my chest.
Dreadful, dreadful customer service. Never has any other energy company made me so angry. It's hard to tell whether it's a deliberate policy of being obtuse, to their financial benefit of course, or whether they just hire real idiots (and of course pay them peanuts) to deal with customer service issues. Either is just as bad really.
I'll be away from them soon, will never use them again, and strongly advise anyone to avoid them like the plague.0 -
I agree They are complete knuts of the highest order.
Simple robbers and thieves
A slow and painful lingering death would be too kind to them0
