Should I go for it?

Hi guys

In a bit of a quandry; I have a job at the moment which I'm not happy in because it's not doing what I want to do and is not contributing towards career plan.

I went for a "chat" with a potential employer but the move is a slight change in career into more of a sales role. I was faced with the opportunity of having to commute to Leicester (I'm from Nottingham) as well as the prospect of working late on a regular basis. However the money is much better than what I'm on now with the opportunity for commission, etc.

I don't know whether to try and go for it or not; I don't really want to commute and the chance of there being late nights means it may intterupt my other job (zero hours contract) but I feel like I'm passing up a good opportunity. What do other people think?

Is it a better wage - ie basic salary or is it a better wage OTE.

With it being a sales role the OTE can sound attractive and tempting, but if you don't hit your targets you could be taking home a lot less than you're on now and paying more to commute.

The basic wage will be either equal to or 1-2k more than what I'm on now plus commission
  • I would go with my gut. The fact that you are questioning it has already answered your question for me..

It depends how much you dislike your current job.

Nottingham to Leicester isn't really that far - it shouldn't take you more than an hour (obviously depending on the traffic and which side of Nottingham to which side of Leicester). So unless you live very close to where you currently work, it may not add much more journey time. It might be worth doing the run, door to door, at normal start/end of day times, so you know exactly what the difference is likely to be.

Apart from that, do remember that if you start a new job, you have little protection from dismissal in the first year (soon to be two years if this government has its way). Depending on how long you have been in your current job, this may also be a consideration to factor in.
