As an aside this is quite a good video for that sort of thing. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0

You are quoting the article not me. All countries see protests but you can generally get a reflection for the mood of most of the population by spending time in the country. The article suggests those who spend time in the country generally get an impression that there is not widespread anger against the regime.
I'm not in complete agreement that the lack of protests against the communist government in China is entirely down to how happy the population are according to the perception of outsiders.
Could there be other factors which might, at least partly, explain why there are not protests against the communist regime in communist China?0 -
That short video is excellent ninky and I would suggest it is essential viewing for anyone open to taking China seriously. Thank you for the link.
There was of course the useful reminder in it that there is a growing divide between the very many large mostly eastern cities where lives can be almost as indulgent as our own, and the rest of China where the majority are almost certainly still truly very poor.0 -

You could, but at roughly the same time that the Chinese Communists were machine gunning protestors most of the eastern european countries were having largely bloodless revolutions.
I don't trust autocratic regimes regardless of them being red, blue, or purple.0 -
Well, autocratic or not, I quite liked this little snippet which suggests that the Chinese as excellent moneysavingexperts have rumbled one western retailer's tricky ways: http://www.yolohub.com/economy/unfair-chinese-business-practices-threaten-profits-of-u-s-businesses
On the other hand they may have upset more than some local palates and stomachs - watch out Asda when China arrives in the UK bigtime
