I used to do maternity cover type roles and it was not at all unusual to find somewhere recruiting where they wanted an immediate, or near immediate start. In one job i had to work notice but take annual leave to go in and do a handover with the person who was leaving in the new job. My new boss then started giving me work to do, emailing me stuff, so I actually ended up doing work for the new job whilst still in my old job (I was in a private office, and very discreet), which was taking the p by the new employer, but I was desperate to impress so just took it. But it was not at all uncommon for recruitment for cover roles to be left to the last minute, for some reason it is not given priority by very busy managers (you'd have thought it would be as it's such a hassle if you get the wrong person and have to re recruit) and I suppose atm its happening more with a lot of people unemployed or employed on short contracts with short notice periods .
