constantly changing tax code

Hi My other half appears to have a different tax code every month
We've always had trouble with his codes and put this down to a very tax costing company car.

He has had K codes for a long time due to this, but has now changed his lease car and is finally in line with the new rates, so should in effect be back in the black so to speak. However, his code still seems to be changing for no real reason. He makes the same contributions each month, for his car, his pension and health care, yet his code has gone from 158L in August to 293L last month, ( and while today's payslip isn't in yet today) i know his code must have changed again as his income is different again and dropped by £100.

I would understand if he was on bonuses, commission etc but he is on a salary which hasn't changed so i just dont understand why it needs to change every month? Some please help me understand!!!!! His tax has been the bane of my life!!!

Paying more tax this month than last may not mean that his tax code has changed. It may well be the same as last month. Last month the code would proberbly have been backdated to the start of the tax year so would be getting 6 months' worth of increase but only getting one month's worth for October. All other things remaining unchanged the October figure will continue to the year end.

To confirm check the tax basis usually shown after the tax code on payslips.
  • thanks, but his code has definitely changed. it has gone from 158L to 293L to and will have changed again today, no doubt back to 158L or something similar, so effectively, 3 times in 3 months.

What i'm trying to establish is WHY the codes change every month when There is no reason for it as from what i can see on his payslips his income hasn't changed, his outgoings haven't changed yet his tax code has. ( confirmed on his payslips).

Tax codes do not usually change because of what you are paid. There should be a tax notification to explain the code change, if not recieved then you need to ask the tax office, proberbly some change in the value of the benefit recieved.

Not sure why you say it has gone back to 158L, have you had the payslip yet?
