  • hi motherkitty!

you mention that you've had your son's name on a list for a paper round for ages and that you've not seen any vacancies advertised in tesco, asda, etc. why not use this as an opportunity to help your son learn to directly contact employers when he would like a part-time job? i have been doing this since i was about 15 years old and i can't remember there ever being a vacancy listed for these sorts of part-time jobs, but that i did have great success when i asked. i was asked to give in a cv (be sure it has no spelling or grammar errors, there are lots of basic ones online to get you started and this is a good skill to develop) and sometimes they asked me to fill in an application. tell him to be polite and well dressed, he'll go far to learn this young! although i am now an adult and have been working for many years in professional jobs, i have always found that good employers look for pro-active people and they keep cvs on file of those who show initiative and are skilled. you never know.

: ) you'll get by well because your have to as others have said! : )

  • Hi...did you get the advice that you needed on how to feed your family. I have a number of strategies for making cheap but really nice and nutritious meals:
    1. I try not to pay retail i.e. what the shops are charging. I shop at the end of the day and get the bargains and freeze them so I have a stock of meat, fish, bread, etc.
    2. I look to see what is available on Approved Foods. This is a discount site that sometimes has very cheap bargains.
    3. I use recipe books or google to meal plan around the food that I have in "stock".
    4. I scale down recipes and make substitutions. I also make one item it in to several different dishes eg. I use part of a tin of tomatoes in a curry and the rest in a pasta sauce. I will buy celery and use it in a number of soups and stews.
    5. Breakfast is usually porridge and fruit and lunch is usually home made soups.

The key to saving money is meal planning and also being prepared to cook from scratch. If you don't normally cook, give it a go as anyhting that is home cooked always in my opinion tastes better than something out of a packet ...so you can't go that far wrong.
  • He is a bit picky about food and wil probably be worse while he is recovering! He is not keen on veggie food, although I am so could probably eat veggie and cook meat for him. A friend who is a nurse told me he needs plenty of protein while he is recovering, so that is really my main concern.

BTW, vegetarian food is high in protein! Eat a balanced veggie diet with pulses, etc and you can end up with higher protein for less money.
