Muppet81 - you dissolve the epsom salts in a water solution (should work with cold, but you may need warm water?), then dip and dry :)

If OH has been recently bereaved, then the extra place setting can be a very cathartic vehicle ;) If you are re-enacting a 1940's scenario, many people were coming to terms with not just one bereavement, but possibly many? It is not a "bad" thing to do (only our contemporary culture makes it so ;) ) it is a very healthy way of a) remembering a loved one and b) keeping their presence/memory valued. It opens up the conversation for happier times, fond memories, age-old wisdom, and associated positives ;)

That is a very interesting slant on dealing with the loss of a loved one and it is way of thinking that appeals to me but I suspect not my OH I will run it by him. Mum had a lovely tapestry of a snow scene which she had done many years ago and although not what I would want on the wall all year round, we have already decided to keep it and put it up in December every year in place of something else. Thought this was a little gesture each year at the festive time to involve Mum in things.

I was growing up in the 1940's and remember our Christmases.
We did always have chicken (courtesy of grandmas hens) and plenty of fresh veg -well, whatever was in season. Brussels were always overcooked............lol so don't forget to do that. Christmas pudding with silver sixpence hidden in it.....and for tea, sandwiches and trifle if we were lucky, if not, jelly and custard and mince pies.
No television, just the radio and games, I think we had Tiddly Winks, Ludo, and what Dad called 'Housy Housy' which is also known now as Bingo.
Paper chains for decorations, our christmas tree was one of those aritificial ones with thick branches.......not much tinsel about so we made things to put on it.
Only one present each for me and my brother......grandma used to make some stuffed toys to add to it.
Very 'frugal' -it had to be, but it was fun. I can't remember not enjoying it:)

When i read your memories of your Christmases in the 40s I wonder if todays "more fortunate" children will have such vivid and happy memories of theirs. Thank you for sharing your memories.

BUT  I am not eating one of my ex battery hens :rotfl:It will have to be mock goose for us.

If you can lay your hands on a gramaphone, the records are incredible. That would really set the scene!

We already have one. Found it in Mum's attic and had it restored recently. Bit short of 78s though. Need to source a few, especially seasonal ones. Such a pain though having to change the needle after playing just 2 records. Does make me appreciate my wonderful ipod!

That is what I love about living a bit of my time in the 40s. You begin appreciate the things you had just taken for granted.

    ^^^^ wow, a real gramophone!

I am a bit of a vintage nut, 1940s is my favourite era too. I don't think I could bring myself to do the Christmas dinner on rations, but dressing up? I don't need an excuse to get me rollers out :rotfl:
I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off :o
