credit rating help?

My mate has moved back in with her Mum, and she is paying off rent arrears in an agreement with her old HA.Her Mum is stressing that it will affect her own credit rating?Any ideas? She hasn't gone to court or anything and has agreed to pay a small sum each month:D:D

  • If it is listed as a default on her file it will definitely affect your friend's credit rating. Some private rental agreements don't always report it but I suspect a housing association would. I would suggest that your friend check her credit report and see if it is a debt listed there.

It shouldn't affect her Mother's credit rating unless they are financially linked, do they have any joint debts or available credit? Having said that if they have the same surname and particularly if they have the same initial and live at the same address it has been known for debts from one person to be listed under another person's credit file as they may confuse who owes what. It's probably a good idea for her Mum to check her credit file as well and be sure that all the debts listed under her name belong to her.
  • They don't have shared debts, or the same initial or surname:DHer Mum is old and easily worried though:o

I doubt its reported on daughter's report (but it would be worth her checking her files to find out for sure). It certainly won't affect Mum.
