  • seems reasonable then... wait and see, they haven't actually said no yet? Can you email the person who interviewed you thanking them for the interview and just plugging your enthusiasm for this specific role/department a bit more?

If the new job looks like it offers better career progression/more interesting work etc and you use that as a justification for taking less money, they may know that in reality they sell this but don't deliver so might be concerned they will disapoint you too much when you find out.

You can always waffle the full renumeration package line to make things look more comparible.

    How big is the difference.

other things that can swing the affordability side,
just paid of the loan on the car so have £000pm free
got a great new deal on the mortgage,
just came off fixed rate onto a 2% tracker

Employers can reject you for any reason they like so long as it is not discriminatory (as defined by the equality act). I've known employers reject a good candidate over someone else just as good because he lived further away from the site, so they were concerned the travel would mean he either had problems getting to work, or would leave for somewhere nearer. This despite the candidate explicitly stating travel would not be a problem. Too late now but it's always advisable to find out the salary range before the interview, and state your salary expectations within that range. Even if they ask 'what are you currently earning' you can always answer with 'my salary expectations are x' and hope they don't probe further although if they really push it I guess it would be hard to evade answering without it looking funny.

People take pay cuts all the time, the employer just wants to make sure you're not using them as a stop-gap. A good reason to use (assuming it has some truth) is that you are fed up of commuting xyz distance, or that having paid off xyz in your previous job, you are free to follow up the job you want, not just the rate.

I think you have to look at it from the choice that the employers have. They have quite likely got other candidates who will see this job as a promotion and a crucial step in their career. Some might be applying for the job after a period of enforced unemployment and really have respect for the increased amount of income to help feed their families or to maybe give them a holiday next year. or get rid of that old rust bucket of a car and buy a reliable one or save up for a deposit on a house. Those people will have a lot of respect for the job and the employer.
