turn your light off & pretend you are out!
actually we don't do that but we are usually out with our own children so miss some of the ones who come to our house. We reuse stuff from previous years so do not have to buy each year & we get our sweets from the cash & carry so they are a bit cheaper.0 -
We just went to asda and got 10 toffee apples for 2p each
Everything is always better after a cup of tea0 -
They each get given an apple - off my tree.
Healthy treat, no sugar, no chemical additives - and no out-lay for me.0 -
We bought one of the big tubs of celebrations from MrTs for around £4.50 - we'll be giving ones that knock a few of those and what's left in the tub will be used in the sweetie bags for the kids for Christmas x0

I am diabetic so did not want to have sweet treats in the house "just in case" so I bought fresh fruit that I could give to callers or eat myself.
The first callers came 5 children about ten years old and when presented with a bowl of apples, satsumas and nuts looked at me and one said "Haven't you got anything else?" When I replied that all these were lovely and they could have one each, two took a satsuma, looking as though it might bite them! :rotfl:
They walked silently down the path gazing at me as though I was mad. Strangely enough I had no more callers that evening, I think word had got round. After all I had given a healthy treat, so they had no excuse to do any tricks!

If you are fed up with the whole racket here are 2 suggestions:
1) Put an empty basket by the gate with a large sign "Help Yourselves"
2) Put up a large sign saying "Halloween is Pagan and Demonic"0 -
Saw this in the Metro the other day...:
Onions - 59p
Bag of toffe - £1.79
Handing out TOFFEE ONIONS at Haloween - PRICELESS

Why not just refuse to be blackmailed into giving them anything? Just Say No!
Or, if you prefer, refuse to give them anything unless they can tell you what "Hallowe'en" actually means ...0 -
Turning the lights off is the best way. The kids might not believe you are out, but most are smart enough to know not to waste their time.
I find it a lot of fun, and try and make it so.
Last year I had a cheap option to make it more interesting. I had a "scary box". I got an old cardboard box, stuck some cling film inside to make it mostly waterproof. Stuck some cold pasta, the insides of the pumpkin, and some jelly, and they had to put their hands inside the slimy mix to get the chocolate bars.
I'm not sure on cheap ideas for this year. At the moment i'm thinking of doing a crime scene, with a body outline on the ground and some police tape.0
