Sorry if this has been asked before... I used the search but couldnt find anything
I'm starting to buy alot of tinned fish... I have been buying sardines in brine, then draining them and adding olive oil, is this the right thing to do? or should I just buy them in sunflower oil?
Also, what does tinned mackarel go with?... I'm not looking for recipes, just the basics... does it go well on toast like sardines?
Thanks

It's not a good idea to buy them in sunflower oil. The point of buying sardines is to increase your omega 3 intake to correct the ratio of omega 3<>omega6 . We are on the whole eating far too much omega 6JoeyG wrote:Sorry if this has been asked before... I used the search but couldnt find anything

So ideally either just drain the brine off or buy the ones in tomato sauce. There are some good health reasons for some people to use olive oil but it's a lot of extra calories if you don't need them.
The mackerel makes a change from sardines and is a good alternative, you can use them just the same. How about some pilchards?

I like mackerel with a salad. I love pilchards and sardines on toast with grilled cheese on top:). Or you could make a fish pie. Put some coley portions, tinned fish (whatever you like really) in an ovenproof dish, add some frozen veggies, and some white sauce, or tin of Campbells condensed soup. Potato and cheese on top. and bake in oven for about 45 mins

Yummy:)0 -
Thanks Ted
Are sardines and pilchards not the same thing?0 -
Pilchards are grown-up (or is it baby?) sardines, so same fish, but different size
