Matching cravats????

Hi all

just after some opinions as to what everyone else is doing.

Wedding isn't until Jan 2013 but me and the OH were discussing what colour cravats he is having. This is his area so I'm not bothered what colour he goes for but I'm a bit confused as to whether the groom and the best man etc have to match.

Looking at some other wedding photo's they all match but my feeling is that if someone was to look at the photo's how would they know who the groom was; am I being stupid!

All the men are wearing matching tartans so the only thing that will differentiate them is the cravat colour.

What are you all doing or what did you do?????

  • There are a few ways of differentiating the groom, best man and ushers; different cravats, waistcoats, a bigger buttonhole for the groom, etc

Entirely up to you/him which one(s) you choose!

phew! so I'm not going bonkers then. Thanks ladies; different coloured cravats it is then. That would totally confuse OH; having to chose two colours; he gets all bemused at the Subway counter so this could send him into meltdown!
  • We dressed our fathers in red waistcoats and cravats and my husband wore them in ivory.
  • Best Men & Ushers wore blue cravats and husband wore ivory. Looked really nice, and easy to differentiate! Plus he matched me better as I was in ivory, not blue!

Guess it depends on your attitude toward the thing. Personally, as the groom, I didn't want to be "special"...I wanted to be seen as an equal to the rest of the guys involved, so I wore exactly the same. The only slight differentiation was the best men, who had little insignia badges, like in You, Me and Dupree - a running joke. That meant that I looked exactly the same as the ushers and groomsman.

Oh, I also awarded the coolest cufflinks in order of seniority...
    So I, naturally, had Batman
    BM were Spiderman and Superman
Then ushers were Captain America and The Phantom
    And groomsman was Iron Man.
But you'd have had to be paying real close attention to pick that up :)

In terms of "how would they know who's the groom"...I thought the whole "snogging the bride" thing might give that away ;)

At my brothers wedding we just reversed the colours on the waistcoats and cravat so best man etc had cream waistcoat with red flowers on and a red cravat and the groom had a red waistcoat with cream flower and a cream cravat.

DH had the same cravat & waistcoat as the BM & ushers, he had a larger buttonhole with an orchid & a rose (a buttoniere), the others just had a rosebud.

My DH had a bigger buttonhole than all the other groomsmen. We had the added issue that he and his Best Man are identical twins and still people could tell them apart.

Another point though, are you letting him choose colours regardless of whatever colour theme you're having? My DH's cravats matched the colour of my Bridesmaids dresses.

  • Ours had all the same colour - Hot Pink. The wedding Party had cravats and husband has ruched tie in the exact same colour. He also had a different waitcoat to the rest of the wedding party. His buttonhole was also a bit more 'fancier'
