Barclays Post BR

Went in to Barclays to open an account post AD. They said that they wouldn't give me an account because Barclaycard were one of my creditors. That isn't right is it?

If they can open a basic account the day after going BR, even with Barclays as a creditor, then I don't see any reason why they can't open an account 12 months later, post discharge.

Try again on that basis, speaking to someone else in the branch and insist they ring up and check their facts if spin you the same story. Even say you are aware of other BRs who have had Barclays as a creditor who have been able to open a CashCard account (with debit card) immediately after going BR.

Thanks Inan. It was crazy busy today and not very private so didn't want to cause a scene. Will try and get there during the week when it should be less busy!

  • Hi Barclaycard were one of my creditors when I went bankrupt in 2008. I was able to open a basic bank account with Barclays the following day, I was also given a debit card at the same time. I have also recently opened a business account with them with absolutely no hassle at all, the bankruptcy didnt give them a problem with it, all they needed was confirmation of my discharge in 2009. My Barclays manager is now a good friend, and we are working on my allotment on wednesday, I'll ask her the question to see if its policy or down to the individual manager and reply when I have her answer.

Did you speak to a personal banker? When I opened mine I was still BR, and Barclaycard were one of my creditors too.

Oh and well done on your AD:T

Went back to my local branch today and the guy was excellent. Bank and savings account opened.

Lesson learnt for me was probably best not to open an account on a Saturday - crazy buy and Saturday staff might not be up to speed with BR.

Thanks If! Think I'll close my Cashminder once I've transferred my direct debits and salary payments. Had a few problems with the Co-op recently
