DWP Dress Code

Hi all,

Just been given my start date for DWP job. Is there a dress code? Would black trousers and a smart blouse be OK?

    Yes there is.

    Men = Shirts/polo & trousers

Womens - long skirts/trousers & a top (as long as not a strapy top)

the code is basically look like you would if you were serving the public. If you are doing saturday overtime then you can wear jeans and listen to music.
ps. hope to meet you one day!

No job I have ever had in the last 40+ years sent a new starters pack telling me what to wear (or anything else in advance of the start other than, in a few cases, the written particulars required by law within 2 months). Are these now common?
  • I work for DWP in a customer facing role and as long as you dress smart it is fine, there are no real restrictions apart from not wearing lycra i.e leggings and jeans.

Most people in my office wear trousers and smart tops.

Well done on getting the job as most of DWP are shedding staff not taking them on!
  • Thank you everyone for your advice - much appreciated! Think I will go for the black-trousers-and-smart-blouse ensemble for my first day, then I can see what everyone else is wearing. When I went for my interview, everyone was VERY smartly turned out, but I wasn't sure if this was just because they were interviewing, or whether they dressed like that all the time!

Thank you also for your kind comments - this has been a LONG process from applying online at the beginning of July. Got "the call" last Thursday, but was so shocked that I didn't think of asking any questions!

Really nervous about my first day, but will feel a bit better knowing that I am appropriately dressed!!

    Thank you again! :)

I can only comment on 12 years worth of work experience on a range from retail to corporate financial companies as a new starter myself and a manager who has recruited 100+ people over that time, but ive either been told or given/(had a team do this) verbally or received paper information (esp in office based roles) over dress code, what to bring (ie passport for proof of eligibility to work in uk and any other documentation theyve requested.) as its a common question.
i assumed that within most large organisations dwp inc this would be the norm.

If it hasnt come up in interview ive asked it myself when discussing the culture of an organisation

    They're usually called customers.
    Don’t be a can’t, be a can.
