Adverese Credit Rating... Not My Fault!

Can someone please help!

I have recently applied for a mortgage from Accord, through a broker, and this was refused.

Apparently my credit rating shows 5 missed payments from Barclaycard. Earlier this year I paid off the full balance of my credit card in full and closed the account. I was not told that there was a payment outstanding for interest from the time of closing the account to my next statement date. I then moved addresses and earlier this year I received a call from a debt recovery agent for £60 in accrued interest and charges. This problem was sorted and Barclaycard assured me this would not have an adverse effect on my credit rating as it was their fault for not calculating this trailing interest amount when I shut the account.

I have tried with Barclaycard to have these missed payments removed from my account but they state they are unable to do so. I have also contacted Experian but they state they cannot find any record of missed payments on my account!

Has anyone else had a similar problem and how it was resolved? I cannot get a mortgage and am loathed to go to a company that will give me one with but with a much higher interest rate.

Thanks!!!!

Unfortunately like it or not, this will be unlikely to be removed, ultimately you owed the interest charge, and Barclaycard were due it, had they owed you money, I am sure you would have pursued it?

Credit cards can be great for building credit score, or disasterous for wiping it out, I would ALWAYS recommend you set up a direct debit to pay them, to ensure they can not be overlooked.

Sorry, but I think you will have to accept this, although hopefully as it is so small, it should have minimal effect on your overall score (Accord are quite picky however!)

Credit card companies issue statements every month and what have attempted to collect the outstanding balance. So a degree of responsibility has to be taken if the credit card company was unable to make contact. Of course its possible that the correspondence was ignored in the belief that a change of residence what just mean that the balance would be written off.

So my comment wasn't made in jest. But a direct question. As why shouldn't the credit record be marked if it was appropriate.

Check your credit report to confirm what's been recorded. If the data is inaccurate, challange it. If not, consider adding a note explaining what happened.

  • I'm sorry I can't offer you any advice re your problem, but I can fully sympathise with you on the uselessness of Barclaycard! I moved house a couple of years ago and I had to ring them on FIVE separate occasions to tell them before the address on my account was finally changed. Lead lots of "late payment charges"
