Do you get tax coding notice?

I think that I have been underpaying tax for the last few years as my tax code has been higher then the usual. I have never received a tax code notice and wondered if i was meant to receive one every year or if only certain people receive them? (self employed, change in circumstand etc?)

the 'normal' tax code is 747L so you are receiving £40 extra tax relief i.e. you are potentially underpaying 20% of 40 = £8 per year
it looks a bit like a clothing allowance ? did you ever have one ?

Called the HMRC today and they asked if i has a uniform to wash. They have put my code back to 747L, i said that it had been high since at least 2004 and did i owe tax back to then but the lady said no. Do you think that they aren't bothered about it because it is only a few pound a year? I would rather pay anything i owe now then get a fine or something years down the line.

I did have a uniform about 10 years ago as my uni job at Macdonalds so i guess it could go back to them.

I asked about the coding notice and not getting one and if you have a standard code them you don't receive them.

Yes that £8 is so small that they [STRIKE]won't[/STRIKE] should not bother to try to reclaim it from you, unless it became part of an investigation into your tax affairs.

The paperwork and procedures to reclaim £8 a year would be considerably more expensive, than the extra tax recovered.

It is a bit like driving at 33 MPH in a 30 limit.
