JSA for couple (one half looking for work, the other a student part time and working)

Hello. I’m after some advice on benefits.
I’ve just finished my Masters degree and am looking for work. I set up a claim for JSA and had the first meeting this morning where I was told that because I live with my girlfriend I was not entitled to JSA. My girlfriend works part time (more than 16 hours) and is a student the other part of the time – clearly unable to support us both! A joint claim was suggested, but as she works more than 16 hours a week and is far from available to work this wouldn’t work. Also, having been a student for the last 4 years I’m not eligible for contribution based JSA
I guess what I’m wondering is there any appeals process with which we can make our case and have our situation review? And also will we be disqualified from housing and council tax help too?
Any help, advice or words of wisdom (or comfort) greatfully received! Thank you

you will still be able to claim for housing and council tax benefit. You will be the main claimant but your girlfriends income and student loans etc will be taken as household income in the calculation

If your girlfriend earns more that £105 per week and you don't qualify for contributions based then there is little else you can do

Ah, the perils of trying to improve one's academic abilities huh? :o

I'm in my 3rd year of my degree and contemplating a Masters, but if I do then I will be in the same boat as you when I graduate due to a contributions shortfall.

Really hope that there's some way that you can both stay afloat financially.
