unemployed but found casual work

hi guys,
been a long time reader of this forum but only just got round to registering.
i've been unemployed for the last few of months (lost my job) and have recently stopped claiming jobseeker's allowance for a few reasons...mostly because i don't agree with the requirements they put in place for claiming, such as the six pointless steps you need to prove you have taken to finding work.
i've been doing unpaid work for a media company as a way of proving to them that i can do what they need me to, with the hope of them offering me a job sooner or later (they have a position opening up soon.) however, they have recently sent me some paid work which will pay just under £1000.
now, my question is - how do i make sure i'm accepting this money legitimately? i don't see any point in registering as self employed as if everything goes to plan i will be working for this company in a couple of months time. and at the same time i do not want to just have the money paid into my account and not declare it and pay the tax etc.
any ideas? thanks.

Contact your local tax office. They have procedures in place to deal for one offs through your tax code or by submitting a self assessment at the end of the year.
Is there any reason the company cannot pay you as a casual employee?0 -
I was in a similar position and I just got paid as a casual employee - no problem as I paid tax and NI on my earnings.0

Nothing wrong with what is required of job seekers to gain the job seekers, pretty much like a job where to get paid you go to work at 9 and work till 5/6 etc.0

Not sure they are pointless as we all have to do them and a lot more0 -

The pay is above the threshold so they can't pay as a casual they have to put you on the books and gross up the pay at a cost to the company. It would be up to the OP to declare the earnings.0 -

Pretty pointless if you're already in with a company and on the cusp of starting paid employment with them, though, particularly if in the process you are working 9-5 and therefore not 'available for work'.
I similarly had to go through the motions when I already had a signed job contract and had a start date - I did it in order to get the JSA for two weeks but it was clearly pointless.Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -

yeah i did pretty much did say i was in with a company. the company have been pleased with my work and they have a permanent position opening up in the next couple of months.
where did i say i was not prepared to look for work? i've been doing difficult, demanding work FOR FREE for the last three months while living on next to nothing so i could have a chance at getting a decent job. what i'm not prepared to do anymore is make up six things that i haven't actually done to please the person working at the job centre so i can get my s**tty £50 a week and be told that there's a job in the local primark that i need to apply for. on top of that, getting to the job centre is a hassle and then having to deal with the moronic job centre employees...no thanks. end rant.0 -
