Appearance of a whole chicken...

Options
We have a whole chicken that we've just got out to cook for Sunday dinner.

The bits of the breast and legs where the plastic is a bit tighter look pale and creamy yellow, compared to the rest of the bird. I would have used it without a second thought, but the OH is getting in a tizz about whether it's fresh or not (it's well within date).

If i say it's ok and we all get food poisoning, I'll never live it down, so can anyone confirm whether this is normal or if it has gone over???

(Urgent answer required - the oven's on and the stuffing is awaiting!!!)

Thanks in advance.

  • If it smells ok, it passes the test ;)

  • Hi, how's it smell? That'll give you the best indication. As you haven't mentioned it smelling bad, it's probably OK.

Make sure it's WELL cooked - look at Delia online for that, and you're likely to be fine.

I would say the same - it could discolour easily but if you have ever had an Off chicken you would know that smell pretty quick!

Should be ok as long as it is in date and has been stored correctly ~ sometimes there are colour differences due to the birds diet I think.

    Thanks, that's what I thought.

It's going in the oven now.
  • yep i agree with the above do the nose test..

i bought a chicken from mt t. this week and when i opened the packaging..... it was humming me a right merry tune...... and it was still in date....

took it straight back....... they only offered a refund.... nothing else for the inconvienience.... was going to say no to the refund and go to the health and safety /enviroment officer in the local council..... but then i would not have had my money back....

i must admit when it comes to food being off... it allways seems to be chicken with me....
