What to do!

Hi everyone! I need help!!! I graduated in 2005 with a third in my psychology honors degree. I went through a bit of trouble in my last six months of the course and think I have been depressed since then as I only got a 3rd. Since graduating I have returned to the pub job I had before starting uni and although I search the internet for jobs relating to my course which I really want to get into, I cant seem to bring myself to do anything applying for them or contact anyone to speak to. Hope this makes sense and Please help!!!

  • OK, you've made a good start by coming on here. What would you eventually like to do, ideally, with your degree? I wonder if something like consumer research would be good, in which case why not get into mystery shopping or market research as a researcher to put a few more arrows in your quiver?

It sounds as if the class of your degree has depressed you - if you get a bit more commercial experience and a few good references it will overcome both this and your dip in confidence. :D

  • Thanks jobbingmusician! In an ideal world, I would want to be a psychology, but hey! So how do I get into this consumer research stuff?
  • sorry I did mean a psychologist hehe
  • I think any consumer research/market research company is usually looking for fieldworkers - and I think you could become a psychologist eventually by following this route (it will take some determination on your part, though!)

In your shoes, I would start by googling market research company, and see if any have any links to jobs.

P.S. Loads of graduate trainee positions here... Good luck D

Don't know if this is at all helpful, but I got a 3rd in my Maths degree, having basically decided I hated the higher-end/theory parts of it but would do the minimum to stick it out, halfway through.
When applying for jobs, I always just put the degree down without the class - when I come to interview they would usually ask and I could explain (and put spin on) the reasons why I got a low grade. Definitely works some of the time!
  • Hi mrsmehere

Have you considered working for your local council or police force /criminal justice system? Was it a pure psychology degree or area specific? It's worth writing 'cold' applications to bigger institutes and asking them to retain you on file for future reference - councils are often looking for temp cover so mention this as well. How about a recruitment agency? They do take a portion of pay however it's a good way of getting your foot in the local employment door. Good Luck :)
