Adwords is the Google advertising programme for businesses. You have an adwords account, load it up with some money, and make an ad - just a couple of v short sentences and a link to your website. Plus some key search words for it.

When people search on google for one of your keywords your ad appears alongside the search results - looking very similar to 'genuine' search results but clearly different if you are savvy - they are usually the column on the right-hand side of the screen in a search results listing - sometimes one or two at the top too. Should all be labelled as 'sponsored listings' or some such phrase.

Google draw-down the money you've paid them everytime someone clicks ('pay-per-click' - hence the OP's 'PPC') through your ad to get to your site. The amount varies according to popularity of the keywords used.
