Experian offer to clean up credit

Hi everyone,

In the process of cleaning my credit file, discharged 1st July 2011.

I just rang Experian to cancel the one month free trial and the fella I spoke to suggested if I email them over a copy of my discharge certificate (which I don't have - only the print off from the Insolvency Service website), they would contact creditors 'officially' and have them update my credit report free of charge.

This is a mute point, as I don't have a spare £70 to obtain a discharge certificate - but I just wonder if anyone on here has gone down this route and if so were they any good?

Also, is there any point in getting a notification of correction written onto your credit report to explain the reasons why certain accounts are showing lots of red? For instance in my case an acrimonious divorce, or is this really a waste of time?

Cheers,

SB1

Hi Skyblue1, Must admit I haven't heard of this!! Maybe another poster can advise further!!!

But what I do know is that creditors tend to just inform different credit report agencies so that is why we recommend you get all three credit reports:-

    Click on blue links below:-

    Experian - Click here

    Equifax - Click here

    Callcredit - Click here

They are £2 each for paper copies. Some people have used the online one's and have said the information was very poor compared to the paper copies.

Please look at the further links, if you don't clear up your files you are in danger of your creditors selling your debt on as two of mine did!!

    Experian can sometimes "assist".

However, it's still usually wise to go through the formal steps of writing directly recorded to the creditors yourself.

That way if push comes to shove, you can demonstrate to the ICO that you have done everything reasonable to resolve and correct the issues yourself.

The letters also require all 3 agencies to be updated in one go, not just the Experian records.

I would also note that you should not think that you have to keep paying Experian their monthly fee for them to do this. They have a statutory duty to pass on any dispute over entries from a recent credit report, regardless of whether you are paying them for their monthly service.

I'll be following through with my own letters and will cancel with experian - the lad I spoke to was nice enough, but as you say all three credit agencies need to be advised.

I had 7 accounts that needed to be cleared up - not a single one has been updated. Grrrr!

Thanks again and I have to say this site is absolutely invaluable!

    Skyblue1,

I might be the minority but I did take experian up on the offer and it took them 2 months of extra monthly payments to sort my file out, but they did do all of them and then I also fopund that my files at equifax and call credit also got updated at the same time.

I think the extra 2 months was worth it as it would ahve cost roughly the same with recorded delivery letters etc and I didnt have to do anything other than send in my discharge cert scan via email.

So in my experiemce it worked

i wonder if this is a new service because i came over here with 2 questions and this was the first of them, im also in the same boat of not having a discharge cert and with christmas looming i wont have the fund for a short while to get one so i cancelled anyway... if i heard good things i may ring them back up though and give it a shot... especially at the £7.99 a month they offered the membership for :) (im guessing they would want the full £14.99 to do this though)

See Fermi's comment above about whether you 'need' to keep up the membership to the site in order to gain assistance.

I have also had Experian clear 2 creditors up for me. They asked me to email them a copy of discharge too. However I didn't have this so contacted the insolvency service and asked if they can write confirmation of my discharge on their headed paper and send it to me (as I was 2.5 years past discharge). They kindly done this and all it was, was one typed line confirming discharge date. I scanned it and emailed them - few weeks later I recieved confirmation that the accounts were settled. After that I cancelled my subscription with them.
