I have worked or been involved in a customer facing role

I worked a week in Sainsbury's does that count (It was my work experience)

this is my first job application and I'm just wondering if my work experience counts for anything

  • If you dealt with customers then yes, it counts! You just have to dress it up and say it was very busy and you dealt with loads of people and so on.

Yes of course it counts - put it down!

What also counts just as much is your ability to think for yourself - when I used to recruit staff I lost count of the number of applications that just said - 'no work experience'. they all went straight into the bin!

Put anything and everything down - have you babysat? Then you have held a position of responsibility. Have you helped out at a school fete, car boot sale etc etc , then you have had customer facing roles. Think laterally and you can find a whole range of relevant experience to mention.

    Good luck. :)
  • You cannot list work experience under "career" but you can certainly put it down - make it clear it was work experience though as you dont want people to think you quit/ were sacked from a job after 1 week of starting it.

    Absolutely!

What I would do is sit down with a pen and paper and think about your day in Sainsbury's. List everything you did form the moment you arrived to the moment you finished. You now have a list of all the task that you performed and can now start to pick some out to put on your cv, maybe think of the skills that your next employer may be interested in. Emphasise your communication skills, how you would welcome interruptions eg- whilst stocking a shelf you would only be too happy to put down the tooth paste and take a customer to the item they were looking for and also asking "is there anything else I can help you with today?". Trust me, I know that employers are crying out for this simple behaviour from school leavers. Good luck with the new job!
