How to silence Tesco/Sainsbury's self-service tills

If like me you find the prattle of the supermarket self-service tills pointlessly rhetorical and a little patronising, there is a simple way to turn off the voice.

There is a volume button on the bottom of the screen: Sainsbury's bottom middle; Tesco bottom left. Press it and the after going to full volume it will mute.

Best to do before you scan anything, but you can do it at any point.

You still get the beep feedback when you scan, just no instructions or questions.

E-pologies if this has been done before, first post. I just wanted to offer a little tip that has made my life significantly better.

  • Thanks for that
But I think the tills should all be on loud just to annoy the staff :)
    Owing on CC £00.00 :j

It's like shooting nerds in a barrel
  • Today at self service I got a full blown surround sound, from at least three other tills "THANK YOU FOR USING MR S CHEKOUTS" Umm you're welcome :S
  • Yes, it is disconcerting when they sync-up and 'harmonise' like that, isn't it?

My dream is for everyone to turn down their tills in unison, to pass through in piece. Even just once.

i'd agree with the above about morrisons

having worked there and used the self service, i must say they are the worst self service checkouts i have ever used.

they are very bulky compared to others, the software is rubbish, and you can't breath without a member of staff being called over. if you have a coupon, a member of staff has to sort it out. very annoying, and much better/quicker to go to a staffed till there.

i do like tesco ones though

    Morrison's are rubbish.

    Sainsbury's aren't too bad.

Waitrose's wont accept a voucher first (and last !) time we tried it turned into a complete pantomime. Supervisor was called, then she had to go and open a checkout, feed our receipt into it, then announced in a loud voice "you didn't scan that item" - WE DID ! She then apologised when she saw it was the TOP item on the receipt - Grrr !
We could have joined the longest queue in the store and still got through quicker that we did that time !!!

Actually, I don't think the machines are there for any other purpose than to "punish" the staff. If you do something wrong to upset the Supervisor, you get x hours on the self checkouts. All that b****y beeping and every other customer snapping at you when the thing stops working - AGAIN ! It is probably banned for POWs under the Geneva Conventions.

Rather like years ago, when a salesman didn't meet his targets: his Cortina was taken off him and he was given a Skoda for a month :rotfl:

i can understand why a member of staff is called as they most likely have to verify the voucher is real but also make sure the voucher is deposited in the slot(was in the new other week where people re used the same voucher by scanning the voucher barcode then keeping the voucher)

i understand what you say, but the problem with morrisons is that they don't trust anyone. every morrisons i have been to, the staff are always looking over the shoulder of everyone using the s/s checkouts. even then the staff do not know what is real and what is not. I always use vouchers from the 'before I shop' website, and on a couple of occassions they didn't think the vouchers were real/a copy, in the end they had to get the checkout supervisor (who does know about them). thankfully i have never had the problem anywhere else.

the likes of tesco and sainburys are fine because you scan the coupon and then put it in the slot, you cannot continue until the voucher is in the slot (unless you stick a piece of paper in the slot, but that is a risky game for the sake of a few pennies, and the ramifications if caught)

The Sainsburys coupons that you get in the Catalina machine (the printer next to the receipt printer) and through the post can only be accepted once. Try to scan them again and it won't let you.

Morrisons self scans as other posters have commented are the worst. 'Please put your item in the bag' in a very patronising tone. If I spoke to customers in that tone of voice, I would get a right telling off.

There is a Co-op in town and pop in everytime I am in town to pick up whoopsies or good offers, the bagging area is badly designed. There are four prongs with bags on them and no-where to place large items such as boxes of washing powder etc.
