I used a Tesco self service and used a voucher. It told me to put the voucher in, so I did, but then still kept shouting at me. So I poked it a bit, and then eventually took the voucher back out to have another go. As soon as I did that, it accepted it!

If like me you find the prattle of the supermarket self-service tills pointlessly rhetorical and a little patronising, there is a simple way to turn off the voice.

There is a volume button on the bottom of the screen: Sainsbury's bottom middle; Tesco bottom left. Press it and the after going to full volume it will mute.

Best to do before you scan anything, but you can do it at any point.

You still get the beep feedback when you scan, just no instructions or questions.

E-pologies if this has been done before, first post. I just wanted to offer a little tip that has made my life significantly better.

thanks so much for this, gonna try it out! sick of hearing 'unexpected item in bagging area' NO THERE ISNT! haha. good idea that needs tweaks.

i understand what you say, but the problem with morrisons is that they don't trust anyone. every morrisons i have been to, the staff are always looking over the shoulder of everyone using the s/s checkouts. even then the staff do not know what is real and what is not. I always use vouchers from the 'before I shop' website, and on a couple of occassions they didn't think the vouchers were real/a copy, in the end they had to get the checkout supervisor (who does know about them). thankfully i have never had the problem anywhere else.

the likes of tesco and sainburys are fine because you scan the coupon and then put it in the slot, you cannot continue until the voucher is in the slot (unless you stick a piece of paper in the slot, but that is a risky game for the sake of a few pennies, and the ramifications if caught)

Ive not experienced the morrisons staff looking over my shoulder but ive only used the ss tills at 3 stores but i can imagine what its like though.

theyre meant o be there for quickness well done t ever use it for alcohol or medicine because it defeats the point they have to come over confirm your age press some buttons you might aswell go to a normal check out

i understand they have to check alcohol but then whats the point in the firs tplac eof going to the ss

Another one here who hates Morrisons. The machine doesn't even give you a second before it's ordering you to put the item in the bag. Also, unless they've changed it recently they don't acknowledge multi-buys, so you have to go to customer services.

    how crap is that?

I only went to Morrisons about once every 3 weeks on average for offers. Its going to be chaos as the queues for the normal tills are horrendous.

What annoyed me was that CS new about it, and I thought to myself, okay, they must be doing something about it. But over a two month period I must have had to go to CS about six times. I don't know if they've fixed it, because if I don't have straight forward shopping I go to a manned till now, because any time saved is eaten up by having to queue for CS. I said to myself, I bet if the store had to hand out a £2 gift card every time like Asda does, they'd soon have the till sorted.

Other than that, I quite like Morrisons or at least the one in Stratford upon Avon anyway.

Anybody know if you can mute Asda in the same way. What drives me mad is when it announces to all within earshot that your card has not been accepted (because you swiped it the wrong way or too fast and now they're all thinking OooH not enough in the account eh? And I may be paranoid but doesn't it have a slightly smug tone. Anyone else talk back to it like me?
There is an unexpected item in the bagging area. Me. Eh no there fudging isn't.:p
  • Thanks for the tip. I try to avoid ss if possible unless I'm buying the most simple of things (1 loaf of bread etc).

Went to T last week in the evening and naturally went to the nearest proper checkout as there was a customer there with about 3 things waiting to go through. As soon as I'd got there, some 'supervisor' marched over and said why ejt i use the ss checkout. I mentioned to him that I don't use them as theyre annoying and rarely work properly, so he put the items through for me! Errr...the point was?!

Yeah, but, are you like me and actually *say* it!? :o

Fair enough, the conversation is a bit one sided, but, hey, I'm used to talking and no being listened to: I have a family ;)
