What i had meant was that it can help deter them, ie being less likely to get them.0 -

This is probably why most head lice shampoos tell you NOT to use a hair dryer; just to keep your buying their non-effective rubbish !!0 -

Definately Nitty Gritty. Bought ours in LLoyds for approx £10, but strips the eggs and lice out of the hair. No longer need chemicals (which invariably didn't work anyway)0

Spare a thought for us poor teachers:o I sit here yet again with an infestation. Gave up on chemicals years ago - I have really long hair and need two bottles so well over £20 a time  plus I really don't like to think what they are doing to my body. I keep my hair up, and comb through like crazy but still have to more or less constantly put up with my little visitors. I have found that tea tree oil works well in the short term and have recommended it to parents.
Amazingly enough last year I was put on antibiotics for a long time and had no visitors at all:rolleyes: Now I know that sounds an extreme form of treatment but don't blame me for feeling desperate.
What annoys me even more is that it gets passed on to my grown up (in their 20s) children who you can imagine are less than impressed. I am going to give the Nitty Gritty a go because really I don't have much else. Even if they had the most powerful nit killer available I know that I would end up being infested again within a week or so because of the way I work.True wealth lies in contentment - not cash. After Becles recommended Hedrin, I put 3/4 of a bottle on my DD's hair last Sunday, left it on overnight and washed out the next day as recommended. You should have seen the number of dead head lice on the towel on her pillow and the size of some of them. Gross I know but I do believe it could have worked. I had combed through regularly but still missed these adult lice. Have to put another load on tomorrow night and will comb through as well but hopefully this will get rid of the damn things. I dont actually care about the chemicals any more, I just want rid of the lice!“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

This seems to be an ongoing saga between me and my bfs ex
we only ever see her son rarely but everytime we do he is crawlign with headlice. Ive had an itchy head for the last week to the point its painful and we've been seeing him since xmas every weekend. Now i just combed through my hair and have found 3 'bugs' so far. as far as eggs are concerned i havent found any on any strands on my own hair ive tested (pulled out)
Went and checked my son and he looks clear - no eggs or bugs etc. looked at my step sons and his head is literally crawling, millions of adult bugs, small bugs, white bugs, eggs you name it its in there. This is abotu the 8th/9th time im going to have to de lice him because if i leave it and tell his mother she does nothign about it adn presumes we are amde of money adn we will do it - soooooo not the case
Now i find it hard using headlice killers/lotions etc as i am extremely allergic ot most shampoos - i have to use johnsons baby and that is it - that i havent reacted too. (thought overuse of that was why my head itched - dandruff etc) so i know its going to hurt like hell when i use this and ill end up missing work this afternoon because i cant let it rest that theres lice in my house. - my washign machine is still broke so ill have to take them up his mothers to wash them, disinfect the chairs, beds, pillows, etc i cant leave it!!!!!!!
just wondered if anyoen had any ideas about anythign else i could try to get rid of them before resorting to the mousse stuff!
Just wanted to say that my daughter caught head lice 20 plus times, I was told to treat it every three days - that according to my ex husband meant I couldnt be bothered. My DD would be clear then go to school and catch them again I really tried but the only thing that worked was leaving school - when she was 16.All my views are just that and do not constitute legal advice in any way, shape or form.£2.00 savers club - £20.00 saved and banked (got a £2.00 pig and not counted the rest)Joined Store Cupboard Challenge]0 -
I found a hint for killing lice which worked for me when my children were younger
5 ml of Tea Tree oil + 30ml vodka + 70ml water.
After shampooing douse har well in mixture (the more you put on the better( - leave for 10 minutes, then rinse.
Comb through with nit comb when wet
Sometimes if infestations are really bad, just leave on without rinsing.
Occasionally I used to spray on lightly (a bit like using hair spray) before kids left for school.
This absolutely did the trick for me0 -
Have been reading this thread with interest, as we too have had the problem. I just used conditioner and the nit comb but it did have to be done regularly.
As for the vodka - noooooooooooooooooo!!! I couldn't possibly do that - could it be substituted for gin? (I don't drink gin! lol)C Card £5218.68 (Feb 2011)£2 coins (No 085) - £190Mort overpayments 2011 - £418.060 -
I haven't read all the replies as I haven't got time at the moment, so sorry if I repeat what others have said.
The Nitty Gritty comb is available in Boots for £9.99, do you don't need to bother going on Ebay and having to pay postage on top!
I have never used chemicals for lice, just lots of conditioner and a comb, and it works. You have to do it more than once though - you have to break the life cycle of them. So you need to do it on day 1, day 3, day 7 and day 10. If you do this they will go. The reason is that on day 1 you will probably get adults and quite a few (or even all) of the babies. BUT there will be eggs which you might not have got, and these will hatch. If you don't break the cycle you will never get rid of them. I usually find that by day 7 I'm not getting any more out, but I do still carry on with the full cycle. My children keep picking them up from a brother and sister at school who are always full of lice. Despite letters going home from school asking parents to check. They will even say that their mum has checked and they have no lice, but, according to my children, you can see them "jumping about on their heads". It's just one of those things, and not something I freak out about.
A horrifying story I read a few years ago in South Africa. A woman was trying to kill the headlice on her son's head, and used paraquat. The son died.0
