Unpaid over time

A vent really - nothing I can do about it.

I was sent to a conference elsewhere in the UK resulting in a total of 6 hours travel time.

I spoke to a colleague in Head Office who over see's the arranging of the conference who said I WOULD get paid the 6 hours.

Anyway - turns out - nope, I wont. Zilch. double checked my contract and it says at times I will be expected to do extra hours without extra pay

!!!!!! - would have meant an exta £70

D'OH - well, i know for next time!

My friend used to be a conference assistant and either she would get paid expenses and an hourly rate or she would get time off in leiu....this was however in her contract. I had always thought that when a contract says on occassion you might have to work extra time without pay this was referring to ad hoc hour here and there rather than a 6 hour trip + conference. But once again...if it's not in your contract.

Do you have in writing what your colleague in Head Office said and does your colleague have any senior standing for you to be able to produce your 'evidence'?

are you just going off your contract or have you submitted and overtime form and been told you're not getting paid for it?

there's doing additional hours - ie staying behind when busy, and there's travelling to a different site.
  • nope not in writing from my colleague - He is based in another country and he advised me over the telephone where to enter my trip data (start and leave time) and said it would be paid but HR and accounts said i wont be paid it and that colleague should never have said that (Incidently he DOES get paid travel time but his contract is different to mine)

This is what my contract states:
3.2 Your normal working hours are 16 hours per week, to be accomplished on at least three days a week. Your normal working days are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. You may be required to work on different days as it may be necessary for the proper performance of your duties after reasonable notice through the company.
3.3 You may be required to work such additional hours as may be necessary for the proper performance of your duties without extra remuneration. It is agreed that your base salary and special payments compensate for all hours worked.

    and the reply from accounts:
    "Regarding your overtime:
I’ve talked to (HR). We don’t compensate overtime as it is agreed in our contracts"

I will be paid the "hours" at the conference which would be my "normal" working day. But the 6 hours travel isnt payable.

Previously they have allowed me time off in leiu but this has been something agreed with my manager and has only ever been for an hour or so - not 6 hours.

Have you talked to your manager about it and whether you could take say a half day off as way of a compromise?
