Sometimes your dependents get more if you actually die at work.

My husbands is something like 4x salary if die. 5x if at work when die and 6x if they die on an airplane on company business!

I keep telling him if he feels unwell - book a round the world work trip asap.

Mine is 2x salary whether I die at work or not, and I'm not paying into the pension (just on a FTC so don't see much point). They all seem to be different so you should check with your HR advisors to be sure.

In practise you would really never 'die' at work, as it takes someone to declare your death. The reality is you would be taken to hospital, even if not breathing etc.

However, a bizarre question scenario and hope it never happens...

Are you planning to fake your own death for the money like the canoeing man?

Are you thinking of relocating to South America?

It's generally death in service, and it can be more for accidental death (again, not necessarily at work!)

Have had the situation where my company's insurer has paid out, unfortunately. It is one of those benefits you hope no one ever needs.
  • I once worked somewhere where one of the staff had died in the office, it was before my time.Apparently the man had just made a large tray of drinks for the staff and was returning from the kitchen. Whilst walking across the office he threw the tray up in the air and had a massive brain hemorrage and died!
The staff were so upset that some had to be sent for counselling!
