Need a fairly powerful vacuum cleaner

I live in a small flat and at present I have a Dustbuster, one of those small, handheld vacuums, but it's not that great. Can anyone suggest a vacuum cleaner that can suck up dust reasonably well ? I keep budgies and I really want to keep their dust to a minimum, then just needing to finish off with a microfibre wipe.
Thanks.
Thanks.
