Angelina-M, a quick question. Do you use the carrot juice as you would water, ie add it to the lye, wait for it to get to the right temperature then add it to the fats and stir?
I've only made one batch of soap (should be cured and ready this weekend - very excited to try it). I'd love to make another batch using milk, and was guessing I add this to the lye in place of water, is that right?
I used a hand-held blender for my soap, it was mostly olive oil and I got trace in about 10 mins!"Then, when every last cent

I've just been reading about using soap base as I was purchasing something else from here:
http://www.summernaturals.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=68&products_id=235 It sounds fantastic with some of the oils, etc added.Nevermind the dog, beware of the kids!0 -

Thats right, but you are panicking me a little by saying add it to the lye. Never add anything to the lye as it could go up like a volcano. Always add the lye, little bit at a time to your liquid. (gosh I felt all grown up then, giving instructions lol!)
Anyway yes, I get the carrots, apples, whatever and put them through my juicer then weigh the liquid (i always weigh it as its more accurate) I use this in place of water. Definately adds interest, for instance the carrot makes lovely orange soap.
I rarely use just water as my liquid, but if I do its the car battery stuff, not from the tap water. I like being exciting so water is boring. I love to do nettle bars in the summer. I chop nettles up and add them to a little boiled water and let them stand so all the goodness leaches out into the water. Its lovely using nettle soap in the middle of winter... takes you back to the hot summer months!0 -
Angelina-M wrote:As for the Lush stuff, if you like that you would adore homemade, they are really a world apart. Lush soaps are a base that they add stuff to, however that base contains SLS and lots of other things that im not happy using on my skin.
Just wanted to add that I work for Lush, and only about half of our soaps have SLS. It's actually not proven to be dangerous at all - some research has shown that it can be a skin irritant, however as you don't leave soap on your body (you wash it off), the SLS (which creates a foam) is mostly washed away. Besides the amount that is actually in soaps in the first place is very small - too small to have a major effect. In fact, I have a regular customer who has eczema who buys one particular soap as it doesn't irritate her skin.
I'm not plugging the company at all, however I think it's important to note that 'negative' research on SLS is few and far between. I personally prefer my soap to lather as it makes me feel cleaner (psychologically I suppose). I don't like putting chemicals on or in my body as much as the next person, however the company does do its own research and attempts to keep down artifical additives they use. It's like preservatives - we know they're 'bad' (or seen as) so it's always one of the very last ingredients Lush puts in any given product. We do our research and all staff know about concerns like these and can advise people on products we have that don't contain certain additives.
It's given me inspiration to make my own soap too, however working for the company gives me enough to last a lifetimeyou can always smell me coming haha
Hope this helps.0 -
It sounds great although I havent used soap on my skin for many years. On my face I only use water & on my body diluted decent quality body washes & oils etc, although not highly expensive. Bodyshop, radox, Boots etc.
When I was a kid everyone used soap all over & it used to really clog up your skin, my other half uses it in the bath & I very very occasionly use it to wash hands, although usually I just use water unless in public loo's etc.0 -

Hmmm, I worked for someone who has seen the inside of a Lush factory and it ain't nothing like their marketing/philosophy makes you believe - big vats being stirred by underpaid students - mind you I guess that and the fact that they overprice on the products means a tidy profit, which is what being in business is all aboutMFW #185
