Can I hand my car back to the HP company?

Hi there, I bought my car on a HP agreement in June 2011, I paid £2000 deposit and have paid every installment so far, I have lost my job and I am now finding it really hard to get a new one, I am so scared of not being able to afford the installments and have no protection on the agreement.I wondered if the best option would be to hand the car back and i think I have heard that if you have paid over half of the value you can do this? My credit rating is good and I do not want this to be ruined.
Any advice would be appreciated
