I tend to just buy a butter basted frozen turkey crown. If you buy it before the Christmas season kicks in you can get one pretty cheap compared to what they will be charging before Christmas. I don't think it's quite as nice as buying a non-frozen turkey, but once the gravy is on no one can really tell the difference. Then I just pile the plates with home made roasties and lots of veg. My mum got some really lovely pigs in blankets in a BOGOF deal from M&S last November which we froze for Christmas.
  • Turkey drumsticks are huge and extremely cheap right now, you could even have a laugh and buy one each and sit there looking like the Flintstones with giant drumsticks :-) Asda has them for 99p normally.

Soup is good and cheap for starter, then do the veg from scratch, buy a bag of potatoes instead of frozen roasties, bag of carrots, make yorkshire puds yourself. £1 shop has some nice cakes for pud. And christmas crackers. It only takes a bit of atmosphere (have Christmas carols on in the background) to make it a special meal, you don't have to spend lots.
Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.

I couldn't recommend them though - I bought one once because my OH moans if we don't have a Sunday roast and I was really short of money that week and it was horrible and gelatinous and made me feel quite _pale_ . Turkey legs - not for everyone! :p
  • I wouldn't recommend turkey legs either - more sinew than meat!

I love the turkey legs but beware of the "quills" that run through them!
Trying very hard to be frugal and OS - just plodding on and doing my best!

Lidl has frozen turkeys in the run up to Christmas that are really good value, cant remember the price but I tried to get away with it last year but my Mum insisted on a fresh turkey, so she paid for it herself.

Am trying to plan and organise the cheapest possible meal for 4 adults and 2 kids.
    Dont know where to start.
    Any suggestions greatfully recieved.

Does it have to be traditional (i.e. turkey with all the trimmings)?

I don't really like turkey so never see the need to pay over the odds for one, faff around trying to cook it and then carve it. A good Christmas meal to me is just something I actually like, plus Christmas crackers! (Which can be bought from the pound shop if on a budget.)
