My porridge problems are over

Options
In common with a recent poster I've had to spend time and elbow grease on cleaning up a porridge pan a couple of times recently when the porridge baked on when my back was turned.

Nearly did it again today and after a bit of a think I decided I needed a double-boiler (also called porringers). As I was going to town anyway I decided to trawl the charity shops for one. Didn't find one, but did find a double-boiler-maker- exactly like the top right item here:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index=kitchen%26field-keywords=double%20boiler%20pot%26results-process=default%26dispatch=search/ref=pd_sl_ov_tops-1_kitchen_14617776_1&results-process=default?tag2=over-adv-20

Tested already and works great - goes in pan, add water, rest smaller pan on top = double-boiler. Plus it takes up virtually no space in my over-crowded kitchen. :D

And for a total outlay of £1 :j

I've made porridge in the microwave too, but it's just one of those things - I like it done on the hob. I'm definitely not anti-microwave but I suspect that as I get a bit older the OS ways of doing things feel more "right" :D

what a great find lizzyb !
I'll keep an eye out for a double boiler as definately prefer porridge simmered on the hob.
  • I make porridge by getting a normal pan and soaking a cupful of oatmeal and a wee bit of salt in a couple of cupfuls of water.

Leave it overnight, then in the morning just add some boiling water from the kettle, and bring the whole thing to the boil on the hob, stirring like mad or it goes lumpy. Only takes a minute or two.

After you've served the porridge, fill the pan up with cold water and by the time you get home from work the stuff just pours away. No scrubbing whatsoever required!

Never tried porridge in the microwave as I'm not sure it would work with oatmeal, and I can't abide porridge oats ... *shudder*
