Jigsaw refusing to give refund for damaged goods

I bought a top from the Jigsaw sale yesterday - it was sold as perfect just reduced in the sale. When I got it home, I noticed a tiny hole in the bottom that I hadn't spotted before. Took it back to the store today (another branch) - there wasn't another perfect top in my size - and the sales person was refusing to give me a refund saying it's "company policy" only to exchange sale goods. I pointed out the top was damaged - that didn't seem to make any difference. It was only after being very vocal that the manager agreed to a refund (straightaway). How can they get away with this - it is clearly against the sale of goods act. Although I like the clothes it really puts me off shopping there again - if they make it so difficult to get a refund. I personally think they should refund within a reasonable period on all sale goods - but damaged?

You don't lose your statutory rights when an item is in a sale. The only way you'd not be entitled to a refund is if you were returning the item because of a defect which was pointed out to you at the point of sale, which this clearly wasn't.0
