Definitions of "I'm broke"

  • I agree that everyone's definition of broke is different, we've got friends who are millionaires that act broke and always want you to be the one to order tickets and then will pay you back at the last minute..don't fall for this anymore as no credit card..other friends are broke when they're doen to their last ££££ inb the bank..my meaning is that I've no spare cash apart from the tenner in my purse until payday.
  • When I was severely in debt it meant not having any money to buy food till the end of the month and having to use PDLs:(

Things are a lot better now, but I'm still always "cash broke" - I budget using my cc to buy groceries etc and this is paid in full each month, but by the time this & the bills are paid, I've literally no "cash" money left to do anything. So if anyone asked me to go out for a meal/cinema etc, my reply of "I'm broke" would be accurate in that sense.

i'm one of those people sho say i'm broke when i'm not :o

i'm in the good position of never being properly broke now altho i can remeber living off £20 a week including elec and desil because thats all the money there was left, however now we have regular weekly income soi never go without food ect but i am trying to save so for me being broke is when i don't wanna spend anymore money because it goes into my buffer i like to keep in the bank or it would mean going into my savings

or maybe i just don't wanna do whatever has been suggested or lend someone money

"I'm broke" or "I'm skint" means "once food, bills and housing are paid, there is literally zero money left". However, I often say that I "can't afford" things like going out for dinner with friends, and that might be because I'm saving up for a holiday, or want some new shoes and I'm making a decision about how to spend my spare money.

I will say I'm broke too to other people, even though I do have savings stashed in the bank - although it is all savings dedicated to variouse things especially the house deposit!

I budget my money carefully and have spending money each month (and often a generous amount of spending money) and when that spending moneys runs out, that is when I say I'm broke, although if the thing someone is wanting me to do, is something i really want, and won't have the opportunity to do it the following month, I can suddenly become unbroke!

  • For me "broke" was when my (now-ex) and I had access to £30 only to last until the end of the month (around about the 25th).

My eldest daughter needed this £30 to pay for her Grade flute exam.

He wanted to use it for cigarettes!

We separated shortly afterwards (his attitude to money being a huge mitigating factor), and I have since turned my life around and will never, ever be in that situation again!

Last year my husband was laid off work so no money coming in until he found something else. His new job (warehouse) paid only a fifth of the income he had earned as an electrical engineer. We did manage to continue to pay our bills but beyond that we were broke. Virtually no food in cupboards etc. One evening I cried all through tea as I served the kids a tin of hotdog sausages with cheapest noodles and value mushy peas. I barely slept for weeks scared we might lose the home we loved. I had to bite my tongue so many times when friends would say things like " I know how you feel, we have had to cut right back, we've only had one holiday abroad this year". Another favourite was " we're broke too you know. We only have £2k in savings and we usually have double that". Sorry but when you can draw money from somewhere it's not the same as being truly broke.

When I first started working and moved out for the first time I once had £10 in the world to last 5 days, I remember debating with myself as to if I was gonna big cigarettes or food one lunch time at work. I ended up saying "Can I can lend a cig? I left mine at home by mistake" all day.

Recently, skint has meant someone has asked me to do something which is very excessive and the money would be better spent paying off overdrafts etc so I'll say "Sorry I'm too skint." I'm glad I did this now because I don't have any debt anymore.
